At DC Products, we provide high-performance industrial silicone primers designed to ensure strong, durable bonds between silicone sealants and challenging substrates. As an authorised distributor for Momentive Performance Materials (formerly GE Silicones), we supply premium industrial silicone primers that are essential for achieving optimal adhesion in demanding environments across the automotive, aerospace, electronics, and industrial manufacturing sectors.

Whether bonding silicone to metal, plastic, or glass, our industrial silicone primers enhance performance, reliability, and durability over time, particularly on challenging surfaces.

Types of Industrial Silicone Primers

Industrial silicone primers are formulated to work with specific silicone chemistries and substrates. We offer a range of primers to match both condensation-cure and addition-cure silicone systems.

Common types include:

  • SS4004: A general-purpose primer for improving adhesion to metals, glass, and rigid plastics with condensation-cure silicones.
  • SS4044: Designed for use with both condensation and addition-cure silicones, offering excellent performance on aluminium, steel, and anodised surfaces.
  • SS4179: A high-performance primer for platinum-cure (addition-cure) silicones, ideal for applications requiring superior adhesion and thermal stability.

These primers are solvent-based and designed to form a molecular bridge between the substrate and the silicone, ensuring a strong and durable bond even under vibration, thermal cycling, and moisture exposure.

How Industrial Silicone Primers Work

Industrial silicone primers function by modifying the surface energy of low-adhesion substrates, enabling silicone sealants and gaskets to bond more effectively. Without a primer, silicones may exhibit poor adhesion or fail prematurely on materials like cast metals, certain plastics, or oxidised surfaces.

The primer is applied as a thin, even layer and allowed to dry before the silicone is dispensed. It promotes chemical bonding between the substrate and the silicone, significantly enhancing adhesion strength and seal integrity.

This is particularly critical in OEM manufacturing, repair operations, and mission-critical sealing applications where joint failure is not an option.

Curing Process for Industrial Silicone Primers

The curing process for industrial silicone primers is fast and efficient. After application, the primer should be allowed to dry for 1–5 minutes before applying the silicone sealant. This flash-off time allows the solvent to evaporate, leaving behind an active bonding layer.

Once the primer is dry, the silicone can be applied immediately, and parts can be assembled right away. The silicone then cures through moisture absorption (condensation cure) or heat activation (addition cure), forming a resilient, flexible seal.

For best results, apply primers in a clean, dry environment and follow manufacturer guidelines for coverage, drying time, and compatibility.
