SILTRUST™ RTV88 – High-Temperature, High-Viscosity Two-Part Silicone Rubber Compound

SILTRUST™ RTV88 is a red, two-component, solvent-free silicone rubber compound engineered for high-temperature potting, encapsulation, mould-making, and industrial release applications where minimal flow and maximum structural integrity are essential. Supplied with dibutyl tin dilaurate (DBT) curing agent, RTV88 cures at room temperature to form a tough, high-strength elastomer that retains flexibility and performance continuously at temperatures up to 260°C (500°F), with short-term resistance to 316°C (600°F).

With an ultra-high paste viscosity (880,000 cP), RTV88 is ideal for vertical mould walls, thick-section gaskets, and structural applications where material stability during cure is critical. Unlike pourable variants (e.g., RTV31), RTV88’s spreadable paste consistency resists slumping, making it perfect for hand-applied gaskets, custom rubber parts, and casting moulds for low-melting-point metals.

Key Features

  • High mechanical strength: Tensile strength: 830 psi (59 kg/cm²) and Tear strength: 42 pli – among the highest in the SILTRUST high-temp series
  • High-temperature performance: Continuous use up to 260°C (500°F); intermittent up to 316°C (600°F)
  • Paste consistency (880,000 cP) – no slump on vertical or overhead surfaces
  • Two-part, room-temperature cure system – no moisture dependency
  • Solvent-free formulation – no shrinkage, odour, or VOC emissions
  • Adjustable work time (0.75–2+ hours) by varying DBT catalyst (0.1–0.5%)
  • Excellent electrical insulation and thermal stability

Typical Applications

  • Fabrication of custom high-temp rubber parts and structural gaskets
  • Mould-making for zinc, tin, and pewter casting, where dimensional stability is critical
  • Potting of high-stress electric motors, transformers, and power modules
  • Industrial release layers for rollers, tooling, and thermal insulation systems

Technical Notes

  • Mix ratio: 0.5% DBT by weight (standard); as low as 0.1% for extended work time
  • Work time: ~45 minutes at 25°C (77°F) with 0.5% DBT
  • Full cure: 24 hours at 25°C (77°F) and 50% RH
  • Cured hardness: 58 Shore A
  • Elongation: 120% – provides rigidity with controlled flexibility
  • Adhesion: Requires primer (e.g., SS4004) for bonding to non-silicone substrates
  • Degassing is recommended to eliminate entrapped air before the cure
  • Deep-section post-cure conditioning recommended for service above 150°C (302°F)

Processing Recommendations

  • Apply to clean, dry surfaces that are prime for adhesion to metals, ceramics, or plastics.
  • Ideal for hand application, troweling, or thick-section moulding
  • For automated dispensing, use high-shear static mixers compatible with viscous pastes

Packaging Options

  • Available in kit form with base compound and DBT curing agent in various sizes.
